Hang your gown on a padded hanger rather than a wire hanger to avoid distorting the neckline or straps. If your gown has a heavy skirt or train, consider folding it loosely in acid-free tissue paper and storing it flat in a box to prevent stress on the fabric.
If your gown requires steaming before the wedding, we recommend having this done by a professional. Many dry cleaners offer a bridal steaming service, or you can contact us for advice. Never iron a wedding dress directly — always use a steamer or a pressing cloth.
A little preparation on the day itself will help keep your gown looking its best from ceremony to reception.
Step into your gown rather than pulling it over your head where possible, to avoid makeup transfer on the neckline. Have your bridesmaids or a family member help you into the gown to minimise handling.
Apply all makeup, perfume, and hairspray before putting on your gown. These products can stain or discolour delicate fabrics, particularly silk and lace. A protective cloth over the neckline while doing hair and makeup is a good precaution.
If your gown has a train, arrange for it to be bustled for the reception. Your seamstress will show you how to do this at your final fitting. Make sure a bridesmaid or family member knows how to bustle it on the day.
If you spill something on your gown, blot — never rub — with a clean white cloth. Do not attempt to treat stains with water or cleaning products on the day, as this can set the stain or damage the fabric. Take the gown to a specialist cleaner as soon as possible after the wedding.
We strongly recommend having your wedding dress professionally cleaned as soon as possible after your wedding — ideally within a few weeks. Even if the gown looks clean, invisible stains from perspiration, champagne, and food can oxidise over time and become permanent if left untreated.
Always use a specialist bridal dry cleaner rather than a general dry cleaner. Bridal fabrics — particularly silk, lace, and heavily embellished gowns — require specialist handling and cleaning agents. Ask your cleaner about their experience with bridal gowns before committing.
If you wish to preserve your gown for the long term — whether as a keepsake or to pass on to a future generation — consider a professional preservation service. Preserved gowns are cleaned, wrapped in acid-free tissue, and sealed in an archival box to prevent yellowing and deterioration. Please contact us for recommendations.
We do not recommend washing your wedding dress at home. Most bridal fabrics — including silk, lace, tulle, and heavily embellished gowns — require specialist dry cleaning. Home washing, even on a delicate cycle, risks shrinkage, colour change, damage to embellishment, and distortion of the silhouette.
As soon as possible — ideally within two to four weeks. The longer stains are left, the harder they are to remove. Even if your dress looks clean, invisible stains from perspiration and food can set over time.
Do not attempt to treat the stain yourself. Blot any excess liquid with a clean white cloth and take the gown to a specialist bridal dry cleaner as soon as possible. Tell the cleaner exactly what caused the stain and where it is located.
We do not recommend vacuum-sealed storage for wedding dresses. The compression can permanently damage delicate fabrics, crush embellishment, and distort the silhouette. An archival preservation box with acid-free tissue is the gold standard for long-term storage.
