Why care matters for natural fabrics

Natural cotton fabrics reward a little care. Unlike synthetic blends that are engineered to be low-maintenance, cotton and cotton-blend fleeces respond to how they are washed, dried, and stored. The good news is that the steps involved are simple – and following them consistently means your child's favourite dress or sweatshirt will look and feel great for far longer than a fast-fashion alternative ever would.

All of our pieces are designed to be washed regularly. We do not expect you to hand-wash or dry-clean children's clothing – that would be impractical. What we do recommend is washing at the right temperature, turning items inside out, and air drying where possible. These three habits alone make a significant difference to how long a garment retains its colour, shape, and softness.

If you have a question about caring for a specific piece – perhaps a stubborn stain or an embroidered detail you are not sure how to treat – please do not hesitate to contact us at info@pocketfop.com. We know our fabrics well and we are always happy to advise.

Caring for Cotton Dresses

Our cotton dresses are designed to be worn and washed regularly. Follow these steps to keep them in the best possible condition.

01

Wash at 30°C

Machine wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle. Higher temperatures can cause cotton to shrink and colours to fade more quickly.

02

Turn Inside Out

Turning dresses inside out before washing protects the outer fabric and any embroidery or print details from abrasion.

03

Use a Gentle Detergent

A mild, non-biological detergent is kinder to natural fibres and better for children with sensitive skin. Avoid fabric softeners on broderie anglaise or embroidered pieces as they can flatten the texture.

04

Air Dry Where Possible

Hang dresses to air dry rather than tumble drying. This preserves the fabric structure, prevents unnecessary shrinkage, and is better for the environment.

05

Iron on a Low Setting

If ironing is needed, use a cool iron on the reverse of the fabric. Avoid ironing directly over embroidery or broderie anglaise.

Caring for Sweatshirts

Our cotton-blend sweatshirts are built to be worn hard. A little care goes a long way in keeping them soft and vibrant.

01

Wash at 30–40°C

Most of our sweatshirts can be washed at up to 40°C. Check the care label on your specific garment for the recommended temperature.

02

Wash Inside Out

Turning sweatshirts inside out protects the outer surface and any embroidered motifs from pilling and abrasion in the drum.

03

Avoid Overloading the Machine

Washing with a full drum can cause friction that leads to pilling on fleece fabrics. A half-full drum is ideal.

04

Reshape While Damp

Pull the sweatshirt back into shape while it is still damp and lay flat or hang to dry. This prevents the ribbed cuffs and hem from stretching out of shape.

05

Store Folded, Not Hung

Hanging sweatshirts can cause the shoulders to stretch over time. Fold and store flat in a drawer or on a shelf.

Stain Removal Tips

Children and stains go hand in hand. For most everyday stains – grass, mud, food – treat as soon as possible by rinsing with cold water and applying a small amount of gentle liquid detergent directly to the stain before washing as normal. Avoid hot water on protein-based stains such as blood, egg, or dairy, as heat can set them permanently.

For stubborn stains on white cotton, a small amount of diluted white vinegar applied before washing can help lift the mark without damaging the fabric. Avoid bleach on coloured fabrics and always test any stain treatment on an inconspicuous area first.

If a stain proves particularly stubborn, please do not hesitate to contact us at info@pocketfop.com – we are happy to advise on the best approach for specific fabrics and stain types.

  • Treat stains immediately with cold water
  • Use gentle liquid detergent directly on the stain
  • Avoid hot water on protein-based stains
  • Never bleach coloured fabrics
  • Test any treatment on a hidden area first
